What is Dukan Diet and its side-effects?

 a French doctor and nutritionist, challenged with the case of obesity started to look for alternative ways in curing the illness. After 20 years of thorough research he published in the year 2000, a book called, Je ne sais pas maigrir or translated as, I don't know how to get slimmer." It gained the best-seller in France after a year it has been published.

It was made a hit in UK when Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge, tried the Dukan Diet before her marriage to the beloved Prince William, she reportedly claimed a loss of two dress sizes. It also allegedly claimed to help five million French. The book is also gaining fame in the US in the year 2011 when actress/singer, Jennifer Lopez, lost pounds after her pregnancy by following this diet.

Dukan Diet: What is it? How does this work?

Dukan Diet is similar to the famous Atkins diet. Atkins and Dukan are much alike in terms of non-intake of carbs initially and do not require portion control or counting calorie consumptions. In Atkins, it requires net carbohydrate intakes and unlike Dukan, it suggests a daily intake of oats, increase water consumption and 20 minutes of everyday brisk walking. Dukan Diet adopts four phases namely: Attack, Cruise, Consolidation and  Stabilization.
Four Phases of the Dukan Diet
Attack:
In this starter phase, the dieter is only allowed take protein rich foods that are exquisitely low in fat. Dr. Dukan provided 72-item list of foods to be eaten, it excludes pork, lamb, poultry products and cheeses. Food should always be cooked but without adding any fat to it, it best to cook in grilling or roasting. It also requires you to eat 1 tbsp. oat bran & 1.5 liters of water per day. This phase should be followed around 2-7 days or more. Results from this initial phase within 5 days may result in 4-7 lbs. loss. This phase promotes quick loss of weight since it is strictly based on a protein-only diet.
Cruise:
Cruise, the second to the fourth phase of the Dukan diet scheme. During this phase dieters who were only allowed to eat protein-only foods can now alternate a 28-items of non-starchy vegetables. They may take attack phase diet for today and take non-starchy veggie diet for tomorrow, and so this phase must go on by alternating these two types of diet each day. This phase may last long enough as much as you want by reaching your desired weight and assuring 2 pounds per week loss.
Consolidation:
As one achieves the desired weight, one has to go the next phase called Consolidation, this is the maintenance phase of this diet scheme where you have to prevent putting back excess pounds. The plan in this phase is less strict compared to the first two phases. During this phase you are permitted to eat protein-only and veggie diet along with a piece of low-sugar fruit, 2 slices of whole grain bread and a portion of hard cheese. In this phase you are allowed to have 1-2 serving of starchy foods and one celebration meal per week. The phase of consolidation does not expect to loss off pounds but rather it is steadily the maintenance process.
Stabilization:
Stabilization  is the final phase and a life-long phase of the diet scheme. In here maintenance of the life-changing diet may be a challenging and tempting. During this portion of the scheme, one is already permitted to allow any food intake that a person wants and by also sticking to the diet rule in the consolidation phase. As Pierre Dukan suggest, that staying on the phase 1 rule once a week and eat whatever you like for the rest of the week lowers the chances of regaining weight.

Pros and Cons of Dukan Diet
Pros: The fast results of this diet scheme is beneficially rewarding and motivating. It allows you to have protein and veggie meal plan diets and does not require you to count off your calorie intakes.
Cons: It is highly restrictive and can exclude healthy foods. Dieters can experience side-effects such as symptoms of headaches, nausea, lethargy, irritable and loss of concentration. Dieters may acquire halitosis (bad breath), metallic tasting mouth and strong smell in their urines. For those people who have problems with their kidneys and liver are not advised to follow this diet plan. It is not also recommended for pregnant and nursing mothers.
Views and Opinions by Health Experts on the Dukan Diet
There are lots of critics in this diet plan. Due to the restrictive type scheme of this diet, some fruits, grains and nuts which are healthy and have high amounts of vitamins and minerals that are vital to the nutrition of the body are eliminated. Keri Gans of American Dietetic Association, said that the lost amount of multivitamins that should be acquired from those restricted foods are not compensated in the Dukan diet. Experts have also criticized that experiencing such side-effects may not be healthy at all.
                         
Summary
I have not personally tried the Dukan Diet, but I have tried the Atkins Diet in the Past.I understand the concept of Starting the Diet with ONLY protein is designed to kick start the bodies own metabolism into functioning more effectively.We all have friends that are either obese but do not appear to over eat,yet likewise skinny friends who appear to live on a diet of junk & not gain an ounce.Although not all skinnies or Overweight people fit into these categories I can understand where these diets work.

Dukan Diet Menu - What Can I Eat on the Dukan Diet?

Have you heard of the new French diet? The latest import from France, the Dukan Diet is altering the way people think about dieting. Doctor Dukan created a method that offers more than flavorless cardboard fake food and it is not a heart-attack waiting to happen with fats and fatty steaks. During the Dukan Diet, you can enjoy delicious, nutritious foods during every stage of the diet.
In short, the Dukan Diet is a four-stage diet where you shed pounds quickly and avoiding gaining back the weight you lost.
Phase One: Attack You start in the first phase called the "attack" phase - lean proteins are your first stage of attack on your fat. You will only eat lean proteins, chicken, seafood, lean beef and lean ham as advised by Dr. Dukan. You can use lemon juice on fish or chicken. Stay away from fatty meats. You can enjoy shellfish like lobster and shrimp during this phase.
Phase Two: Cruise In the cruise phase or second stage, a long list of approved vegetables is added and alternated with the all-protein days. Examples are lettuce, chard, spinach and broccoli. Avoid starchy vegetables.
Phase Three: Consolidation During the third or consolidation phase, you will begin to add in bread, low-fat butter, fruits, pasta and the other foods you enjoy. Not a free-for-all, Dr. Dukan gives instructions for what foods and how much to eat during this phase.
Phase Four: Stabilization In the final phase or stabilization, you can eat just about anything - six days a week. On the seventh day, you will go back to the all-protein diet from the first phase.
What's on the Dukan Diet Menu During the first phase, Dr. Dukan shares lots of terrific recipes to get you creatively thinking about recipes of your own. With tons of options like shellfish and chicken, lean ham and lean beef, you have good proteins to start with. Dukan suggests using spices liberally to make delicious dishes. Try grilled shrimp with herbs, sashimi, lemon garlic chicken on the grill, eggs scrambled with basil or chervil and more.
During the cruise phase, you can enjoy all of those good proteins along with tons of yummy veggies. Again, Dr. Dukan gives recipes to assist you during the diet including one for beef and vegetable kabobs and some other terrific and easy to execute recipes. What you can and cannot eat in each phase are clearly explained, so it is not hard to develop your own creative recipes within the guidelines.
During the third and fourth stages - you can enjoy bread, fruit, cheese and other foods. The guidelines are specific about how much you can eat of the newly added foods each day. How much weight you have lost during the first two stages will determine how long you will stay in the third phase. The M Diet - The Latest New Diet

Not a day goes by when we don't hear of the latest diet craze hitting town. Over a decade ago, Atkins was the main craze with its love of protein and disdain for carbs. Recently we have seen new diets such as 5:2 Diet and Dukan overtake the Atkins Diet as the new diet of today. But there is a new diet on the horizon which has many celebrity followers such as Kelly Osbourne and Katy Perry - the M-Plan. This is a new diet that has only recently been given worldwide attention. But what is the M-Plan and more importantly, does it really work?
What is the M-Plan?
The M-Plan's key goal is to replace one meal with a mushroom dish for 14 days. Jeannette Jackson, an advocate for the M-Plan, describes the plan as keeping weight off the areas that you don't want to be fat. So if you want to keep your bust in check, Jeanette Jackson says that the M-Plan will definitely keep that goal. Mushrooms are high in fibre and low in GI and Jeanette notes that "If we eat more mushrooms, it's likely that less high calorie foods will be consumed throughout the day overall because of the vegetable's powerful nutritional values." To boost its weight loss properties, it's advised to add physical exercise and eat a healthy balanced diet to see the M-Plan's benefits overall.
Critics of the M-Plan
The M-Plan has faced criticism due to its lack of evidence to support its claim that by replacing a meal with a mushroom one, it's going to boost weight loss. Whilst its well-known that mushrooms are high in fibre and low GI foods, it's sceptical that it can lose weight in some places of the body and not others. Leading nutritionist, Lucy Wyndham-Read quoted that, "it's untrue that mushrooms have the power to lose fat from everywhere except the bust. 'I advise women not to expect this to happen." So eating mushrooms is beneficial but to achieve your ultimate weight loss goal, it is advised to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet with physical exercise included.
Other Diets
Apart from the M-Plan, there are many diets to choose from. Diets such as the 5:2 diet 5:2 diet, Dukan and Paleo diet all follow similar principles or low carb, low GI foods, but have more solid foundations than the M-Plan. Will the M-Plan be popular? Yes. Like with any diets endorsed by celebrities and heavy media backing, it will undoubtedly create followers but it's vital to do your homework before undertaking any diet plan.
